This booklet lists the names, addresses and phone numbers of the members of the Masonic Melrose Lodge No. 67 in 1939. Most are local to the Dunbar area of Vancouver, with some further out of town and international.
The addresses are a mix of residential and business offices and the phone numbers are all the older type that used letters and numbers.
The cover reads, “Names and Addresses of Members of Melrose Lodge; January, 1939; H Robertson, Secretary, 3441 West 33rd Avenue; Phone Bay, 8353-L.”
The surnames are listed below, followed by photos of all the pages. Some of the names included are:
- Harry Robertson: he was the Secretary noted on the cover, and his home address, 3441 W 33rd Ave, was used as the Lodge’s office address. Luckily, Janice Kreider took a photo of it (below) for her Disappearing Dunbar (Demolitions) site before the house was replaced in 2014. Harry was an assessor for the Workmen’s Compensation Board, according to Vancouver Vanishes.
- Fred Deeley, 1192 W 37th Ave, Vancouver: known for his Harley-Davidson dealership, the Fred Deeley Showroom at 901 W Broadway.
- Zebedee Kee Estey, 5809 Willingdon Place, Vancouver: according to his marriage record, he was a tea and coffee merchant, and from the New Brunswick Estey family of politicians and judges.
- John Young McCarter, 6062 Marguerite Ave, Vancouver: architect; founded the firm McCarter Nairne, responsible for the design and construction of local landmarks such as the Seaforth Armoury, Marine Building, the former Devonshire Hotel and the Georgia Medical-Dental Building:
- Stanley Stewart McKeen, 915 Powell St, Vancouver: became a Liberal Senator in 1947, and was a director of many BC companies.
- Walter William Rawlinson, 3456 W 31st St, Vancouver: a detective with the City of Vancouver Police Department, and original owner of this address book.
- Charles Edwin Thompson, 901 Seymour St, Vancouver: became a Vancouver alderman in 1945 and mayor in 1949. He was apparently also a member of the Masonic Latonia Lodge No. 125 in Saskatchewan.
- John F.C.B. Vance, c/o City Police, 236 E Cordova St, Vancouver: forensic investigator, “known internationally as the Sherlock Holmes of Canada” and subject of an excellent book by Eve Lazarus.
